A client website was hacked yesterday and all files deleted, so we asked the hosting company to restore everything from backup.
No, not really. At first the backups were out of date and FTP access went AWOL, but we muddled through. The public site was eventually restored, but we couldn’t get into the WordPress admin. Entering our details simply redirected us to the login page again. Turns out this problem has affected quite a few sites, as a quick search for ‘wordpress login loop’ or ‘wordpress login redirect’ will prove.
I tried all the suggested things such as removing WordPress plugins, deleting .htaccess, checking file permissions, but nothing worked. Eventually the hosting company checked the file permissions for the site database. It was on read-only. A quick change to read/write and we could login again.
So, if you get the WordPress login loop error, check your database hasn’t been set to read-only.
